PM MODI VISIT TO SWEDEN


Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Gothenburg, Sweden, on May 17, 2026—the third leg of his five-nation tour—at the invitation of Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. He was warmly welcomed at the airport by his Swedish counterpart, Ulf Kristersson, a gesture that underscores the significance of this visit. The Prime Minister had earlier visited Sweden in 2018 for the first-ever India-Nordic Summit. This established a primary gateway for India's engagement with the broader Nordic region, emphasizing shared values ​​and mutual prosperity.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was greeted with a celebratory traditional Bengali cultural performance upon his arrival at his hotel in Gothenburg.  An enthusiastic crowd of well-wishers, proudly waving the Indian tricolour, lined the venue to cheer the Prime Minister, creating an electric, festive atmosphere that seamlessly bridged Indian traditions with the Swedish setting.

His visit has generated strong enthusiasm among Swedish political leaders, businesses, and the Indian diaspora. Both countries agreed to elevate their relationship to a Strategic Partnership, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi held talks with his Swedish counterpart Ulf Kristersson, focusing on trade, technology, defence, and other key areas.

Mr. Modi added that the relationship between India and Sweden rests upon a strong foundation of democratic values, the rule of law, and human-centric development.


DELEGATION–LEVEL TALKS


Sweden is regarded as one of Europe's leading innovation-driven economies, and both countries are looking to expand strategic cooperation in future-oriented sectors. During the delegation-level talks, the two Prime Ministers reviewed the full spectrum of India-Sweden relations and they agreed to elevate the bilateral relationship to a Strategic Partnership, marking a major milestone in the relationship.


PM NARENDRA MODI RECEIVED SWEDEN’s 2nd HIGHEST HONOUR


Sweden confers the Royal Order of Polar Star, Degree Commander Grand Cross upon PM Modi in recognition of his exceptional contributions to the India-Sweden relationship and his visionary leadership. It is the 31st global honour for Prime Minister Narendra Modi.  PM said that this is not merely an honour for me. It is an honour for the 140 crore people of India. It is also an honour for all our friends in Sweden who have enriched India-Sweden relations.


PM URGES SWEDISH COMPANIES TO ENHANCE PRESENCE IN MANUFACTURE, GREEN ENERGY SECTORS


Asserting India's growth is in full swing, Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked several Swedish companies to contribute more to areas such as green energy and the manufacturing sectors.

Wooing European companies, Modi highlighted the potential in five broad areas, including telecom and digital infrastructure, and said they can help in making India a global research and development hub.

He also urged the companies to collaborate in fields such as electronics, deep tech manufacturing, AI, green energy, infrastructure, mobility, urban transformation, healthcare, life sciences, and others.

Highlighting the shared foundations of the bilateral relationship, the Prime Minister said, "The relationship between India and Sweden rests upon a strong foundation of democratic values, the rule of law, and human-centric development. Both our nations view innovation as a vehicle for development, regard sustainability as a shared responsibility, and consider democracy to be our greatest strength."

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Sweden marks another milestone in India-Sweden relations, while emphasising the shared ambition to significantly deepen economic and strategic cooperation between India and Europe.

Addressing the European CEO Round Table hosted by Volvo Group, Kristersson said the European Union, Sweden, and India recognise the immense potential of stronger partnerships at a time when the world remains increasingly complex and unpredictable. Highlighting growing economic cooperation, Kristersson said both countries share the ambition of doubling bilateral trade and investment within the next five years.

PM Modi expressed his appreciation to the Swedish Prime Minister for presenting facsimiles of two handwritten epigrams by Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, preserved in the Swedish National Archives. He also expressed his heartfelt thanks to the Government and people of Sweden for this thoughtful gift. It is a reflection of the long-standing cultural bond between the two nations.
