First Prime Ministerial Visit from India to Norway in 43 Years

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Norway from May 18-19, in the fourth leg of his foreign tour to attend the 3rd India-Nordic Summit bringing together leaders of the five Nordic Countries of Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, and Denmark. This will be PM Modi’s first visit to Norway and the first Prime Ministerial visit from India to the country in 43 years.

Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre broke protocol at the airport to receive PM Modi. PM Modi received a warm welcome from the Indian community after arriving in Oslo for his State visit to Norway. Members of the Indian diaspora gathered to greet the Prime Minister, waving Indian flags and chanting “Modi, Modi”.

PM Modi also witnessed cultural and musical performances organized in his honour and interacted with young girls who performed a traditional dance to welcome him. He will also review the progress made in India-Norway relations and explore avenues to further strengthen them, with a focus on trade and investment.

HIGHEST CIVILIAN HONOR

King Harald V of Norway conferred Norway's highest civilian honor, the 'Grand Cross of the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit,' upon PM Modi. The award, one of the country’s most prestigious recognitions, marks the 32nd international honour received by Modi during his tenure as Prime Minister. PM said this honour is dedicated to the people of India and is a tribute to the enduring friendship between India and Norway.

ENERGY SECURITY AND COLLABORATION

As a major global oil and gas exporter, Norway is central to India's energy hunt, particularly amid disruptions from the Russia-Ukraine war and rising crude prices. Discussions heavily feature Norwegian energy giant Equinor's 15-year LNG supply agreement with India, alongside the signing of multiple business-to-business MoUs in the energy and green technology sectors.

PM MODI DISCUSSED CLEAN ENERGY, DIGITALISATION, TRADE WITH NORDIC COUNTERPARTS

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held separate bilateral meetings with the prime ministers of Iceland and Finland, as well as Denmark’s acting prime minister, focusing on expanding cooperation in clean energy, trade, and sustainability and digital technologies. The meetings took place ahead of the 3rd India-Nordic Summit, with discussions centred on strengthening India’s overall ties with the three Nordic countries and reviewing the broader trajectory of bilateral relations.

PM MODI ADDRESSED THE INDIA-NORWAY BUSINESS AND RESEARCH SUMMIT

PM Modi held bilateral talks with the Prime Minister of Norway and addressed the 'India-Norway Business and Research Summit.' The primary focus of the visit was to promote green technology, the maritime economy (Blue Economy), digitalization, and clean energy.

Last year, India and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) implemented a historic Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement. This agreement serves as a blueprint for ensuring shared growth, progress, and prosperity between India and Norway. This agreement sets a target of attracting investments totalling 100 billion dollars into India and creating one million jobs over the next fifteen years.

In a major diplomatic breakthrough, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India and Norway are entering a “golden age” of bilateral ties, highlighted by Oslo’s massive USD 100 billion investment commitment across India’s business, technology, and green energy sectors.

India is actively leveraging its diplomatic and economic engagements with Norway to significantly scale up the nearly USD 28 billion already invested by the Government Pension Fund Global (GPFG) in the Indian capital markets.

India welcomes Norway’s decision to join the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative, noting that both countries, as leading maritime nations, are working to deepen cooperation in the blue economy.

PM Modi said, "India and Norway, both, believe in a rules-based order, dialogue, and diplomacy. We agree that no issue can be resolved through military conflict alone. Be it Ukraine or West Asia, we shall continue to support every effort towards the early end of the conflict and peace."

This visit has given a new dimension to trade, investment, and strategic partnership between the two countries. Highlighting the significance of the Nordic leg of the tour, S.C. Ralhan, President of the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO), stated, "The growing strategic synergy between India and the Nordic countries can open up new avenues for Indian businesses, startups, and technology partnerships, while also assisting India in advancing towards sustainable and green growth."
