Why is Greenland so important to America?
Recently, America's newly elected President
Donald Trump has discussed annexing Greenland to his country. There has also
been talk of merging Mexico and Canada, which has become a topic of discussion
at the global level. This statement by Donald Trump is of great importance.
Trump's ambitions for Greenland are not new.
In 2019, he said that it would be a 'great real estate' deal. This time Trump
has loudly talked about buying Greenland after winning the election. He
emphasized that "ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute
necessity"
This can also be gauged from the fact that
his son Donald Trump Jr. has recently visited Greenland. He has reached Nuuk,
the capital of Greenland. However, Trump Jr. said that he has come on a
personal visit to talk to the people and he has no plans to meet government
officials.
Let us tell you that Greenland is the world's
largest island on the shortest route from North America to Europe. It is also
the center of America's largest space facility. America had established a radar
base in Thule during the Cold War.
Trump believes that this island is very
important for the military's efforts to monitor Russian and Chinese ships
'present everywhere'. He talked about protecting the free world and making
Greenland great again in the press conference.
However, Trump is not the first US president
to suggest buying Greenland. The idea was first proposed by the 17th US
president, Andrew Johnson, in the 1860s. He even bought Alaska from Russia for
$7.2 million in 1867.
In 1946, US officials offered $100 million in gold bars
for the world's largest island, citing "military necessity". The 1946
offer was kept secret. It was revealed in 1991 when a Danish newspaper
uncovered confidential documents. But in 1947, Time again got wind of similar
plans. After 1947, the same strategic concerns have again come to Trump's mind.
Greenland's natural
resources are considered to be the biggest reason for this.
It is believed that this is a strategic place where
precious mineral wealth can be found. Greenland's resources are considered to
be the biggest reason for this. Greenland's natural resources, such as coal,
copper, zinc, and iron ore, are abundant, due to which America is taking a lot
of interest in it.
A report published by the Geological Survey
of Denmark and Greenland in mid-2023 states that the 400,000 square kilometer
area here, which is not covered by ice, has light or heavy deposits of 38
minerals. All of these are considered essential materials in the European list.
There are large reserves of copper, graphite, niobium,
titanium, and rhodium here, along with significant deposits of rare earth
minerals. It is believed that up to 25 percent of the world's rare earth
elements may be in Greenland and this material could be 15 lakh tones.
Greenland has been in America's sights because of its
strategic position.
America considers it important for its
security. The US President discussed with his advisors the purchase of
Denmark's autonomous region Greenland and seems too serious about this. America
needs Greenland for its national security.
Trump has said through his social media
platform that America believes that our control over Greenland is very
important for national security and freedom to travel anywhere in the world.
This is a clear indication that even if
Greenland succeeds in getting rid of Denmark, it cannot get rid of America.
During World War II, it was seen as a way to
stop the Nazis. During the Cold War, it was seen as a place from where the sea
routes between Europe and North America could be controlled. Because it is
geographically close to the Arctic.
Political and geographical description of Greenland
The population of the island of Greenland, which has an
area of 2.1 million square kilometers, is only 57 thousand. They
mostly live in the 20% of the country that is not covered by ice and
snow. Eighty percent of the island is permanently covered in about 4 km
thick ice.
Because of the Arctic climate, the people of
Greenland mostly live on the coast in settlements and cities. Due to the short
summers, fishery and hunting have historically been the key to survival.
Fishing is still the most important driver of
the Greenlandic economy. However, the fishing industry does not provide as many
jobs as before.
Greenland's climate and geography make
farming almost impossible, except for the extreme south of the country, where
sheep farming is popular.
Greenland, which has many types of autonomy, has an
economy dependent on Danish subsidies and is a part of the Kingdom of Denmark.
Greenland was a Danish colony until 1953 when
it was redefined as a district of Denmark. The distance between the capitals of
Greenland and Denmark is approximately 3532 km.
Despite this, Greenland has been politically
and culturally linked with Denmark for over a millennium. In addition to its
local government, Greenland has two representatives in the Danish Parliament,
the Folketing.
Denmark originally had sovereignty over
Greenland under a 1951 agreement, but the US was given everything it wanted in
the agreement. The people of Greenland know that America is never going to
leave from there.
The fact is that after taking control of this
island during World War II, the Americans never actually left here.
Greenland's natural beauty is breathtaking
Icebergs are some of the most spectacular
natural formations in Greenland. These majestic floating masses of ice are
sometimes several stories high. Icebergs are the result of the constant
movement of the Greenlandic ice cap. Only about 10 % of an iceberg is above the
sea.
The sun does not set in Greenland from May 25
to July 25, and it is visible all day and night. You can come here and enjoy
the midnight sun. It can be said to be a very spectacular natural phenomenon
that everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime.
June 21 is the longest day of the year called the summer
solstice and is a national holiday in Greenland. You will find locals
sunbathing or enjoying barbecues in nature.
In autumn, the scenery here can be called a
beautiful tundra. The willows, bilberries, and various other flowers here will
turn into bright green, red, and orange flowers.
There are villages and towns that you can
visit when you go by the ship. People are very beautiful and friendly. Locals
have boats that go out a lot and they also have kayaks. Actually, “Kayak” is a
Greenlandic word and it means a light narrow boat for one person, that you move
using a stick.
And when you’re out there in the quiet you can hear the ice sing. Here you find air bubbles are formed. These Air bubbles are trapped in Greenland’s ice sheets, and they can reveal information about the climate and the history of the ice. It’s very unique to Greenland.
Seals are in abundance in Greenland. There are five species of seals. They are not endangered. And local hunters will hunt them for their meat. Greenland is home to the world's largest national park. The entire northeast of Greenland is a huge national park.
If you are going on a trip to Greenland, there is a 99% chance that you
are going to experience nature that is wild, beautiful and unspoiled. Nature in
Greenland is unique.
