CAN SHEIKH HASINA MAKE A COMEBACK?

Taking power in August, Muhammad Yunus, head of the interim government and Nobel Prize winner, told Bangladeshi people in a televised speech that the aim of reforms would be to introduce an accountable political system against corruption, plunder, and genocide. If we lose this opportunity now, we will lose as a nation.

When we analyze the above truthfully, we will find that the situation in Bangladesh has not improved yet. Yunus accepts that there have been attacks on minority Hindus in Bangladesh, but he does not consider its basis to be communal. Whatever it may be, the current situation in Bangladesh is not good and it seems Yunus has failed to convince 170 million people that the country can survive without the family of its founder.

Secularism and the fight against Islamic fundamentalists are the most important issues in Bangladesh politics, and the Yunus government seems to be failing on these issues. The latest example is the dissolution of the committee reviewing textbooks in Bangladesh in September, for which Yunus's government was criticized. His move was considered a "worrying and dangerous" compromise with Islamic fundamentalists.

Despite India's strong protest and warning on the violence against the Hindu community, which constitutes about 8% of the population in Bangladesh, the Yunus government has not taken any concrete steps on this matter. Mohammad Yunus has certainly condemned the violence but has not taken any strict action so far, which is why questions are being raised about his attitude.

The Government More Interested in Politics than Public Issues

The government is facing many challenges, but it is more interested in politics than in public issues. A big crisis is brewing in front of the country. The decisions of Mohammad Yunus's government seem to be more aimed at pleasing the fundamentalists and Islamists and less at the welfare of the people and the country.

The country's most profitable business, the textile industry, is facing many challenges. Domestic problems have badly affected Bangladesh's textile industry. It seems as if Mohammad Yunus's government is working under the pressure of fundamentalist forces.

Bangladesh in a State of Chaos

It has been three months since Bangladesh's former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted after the coup. But the atrocities against Hindus there are not stopping. Recently, Hindus were attacked in Chittagong, Bangladesh.

There is anger among Hindus due to an inflammatory social media post on the ISKCON temple and Sanatan Dharma in Chittagong. When Hindu organizations took to the streets in protest, the army beat up the protesters.

According to media reports, local Hindus were brutally beaten up there. Famous Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen has also revealed that the police and security forces were lathi-charging the protestors and using indiscriminate force.

Ever since the fall of the government in Bangladesh, cases of violence against the minority Hindu community have been increasing day by day. In August, 205 cases of attacks on Hindus were reported in 52 districts of Bangladesh.

A Chronological List of Attacks on Hindus

In 2009, an orphanage run by ISKCON Temple Chittagong was attacked. In 2015, ISKCON Temple Dinajpur was attacked by terrorists. In 2016, ISKCON Temple in Sylhet was attacked by fundamentalists. In 2018, a Rath Yatra organized by ISKCON Dhaka was attacked, killing 6 devotees.

In 2020, police foiled an attack by terrorists on the ISKCON temple in Dhaka. In 2021, the ISKCON temple in Noakhali was attacked on Durga Navami. In 2022, the ISKCON temple in Dhaka was attacked by fundamentalists.

No matter who is in power, atrocities against Hindus have always happened. However, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami chief Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has denied this and said that Hindus are our brothers. Our organization has been falsely accused of attacking Hindus. He also expressed hope for good relations with India.

Donald Trump Condemned the Attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh

Donald Trump was the only leader who strongly condemned the attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh on the occasion of Diwali before the elections. He was the first big leader of America who made a statement about the atrocities on Hindus in Bangladesh. Trump held the Biden administration responsible for this.

He strongly condemned the barbaric violence against Hindus, Christians, and other minorities in Bangladesh and alleged that minorities were being attacked and looted by mobs in Bangladesh.

He accused his rival Democratic Party candidate Kamala Harris and President Biden of ignoring the plight of Hindus across the world and promised to protect Hindus and Americans. He wrote, 'this would never have happened while I was here’.

America's first big statement on Hindus in Bangladesh after Trump's victory

The US, which remained silent on the attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh, has now made a big statement on this matter for the first time. US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller recently said that the US wants religious freedom to be respected in Bangladesh and there should be accountability for any attack.

Miller has made it clear in his discussions with Bangladeshi officials that he wants to see religious freedom respected.' This situation applies not only to Bangladesh but to any country in the world.

Hasina's Return is Quite Credible

There is speculation that Hasina's return is "quite credible." History shows that the possibility of a party's return to dynastic politics in South Asia can never be ruled out. In such a situation, there seems to be a ray of hope in the general elections.

Anyway, Yunus's government still seems unstable. In such a situation, Hasina and her supporters will do whatever is necessary to save Bangladesh and protect the Awami League. They will not leave them in trouble. In the last 3 decades, thanks to the Sheikh Hasina government, Bangladesh has succeeded in changing its fortunes and image through the textile industry.

One of Bangladesh's major achievements during Sheikh Hasina's rule was economic growth and rising incomes, and it was emerging as the fastest-growing economy in Asia-Pacificgross domestic product (GDP) was expected to grow from $71 billion in 2006 to $460 billion in 2022.

Overall, China and Pakistan would never want Sheikh Hasina's Awami League to come back to power in Bangladesh. They know very well that India and Sheikh Hasina have very good relations. In such a situation, if the Awami League government comes back to power in Bangladesh, it would be natural to expect it to ensure the safety of Hindus.

It remains to be seen what role America will play in this. All these things are being said because now Donald Trump is going to become the President of America once again. After Trump's victory, the situation in Bangladesh seems to be changing rapidly.

The enthusiasm for Sheikh Hasina's party Awami League is high. Sheikh Hasina is also hopeful of her return. In the congratulatory message sent to Trump, she called herself the 'Prime Minister'.
