What is the issue of China and Taiwan?
The issue between China and
Taiwan is basically a geopolitical dispute, where China considers Taiwan as one
of its provinces, while Taiwan considers itself an independent and sovereign
nation. There is a lot of tension between the two on this issue. Taiwan is a
self-governing island on which China claims its rights. Taiwan says that its
army is capable of giving a befitting reply to any nefarious act.
As
per a Reuters report, Taiwan separated from China in 1949. Taiwan's
then-President Chiang Ching-kuo rejected Beijing's olive branch in 1979 and
later that year came up with the "three-no policy": no contact, no
compromise, and no negotiation with China.
According
to an analysis done by The Washington Post, more than 70 percent of Taiwanese
believe that Taiwan is already an independent country. They do not want
unification with China.
TAIWAN DESCRIBES ITSELF AS A DEMOCRACY WITH A FREE MEDIA
Taiwan calls itself an
independent country. This country has its constitution, an elected government,
and its leader. Taiwan says that it is not a puppet of China. Taiwan is a
democracy with a free media and no one can run a dictatorship on it.
Taiwan
wants to maintain peaceful relations with China, but it has every right to
defend itself. Taiwan says Beijing should focus on its own sinking economy
instead of criticizing its neighbors. Taiwan has repeatedly rejected Beijing's
claims and said that it is the people of Taiwan who will decide their own
future.
ACCORDING TO CHINA, IT IS UNFAIR FOR TAIWAN TO CONSIDER ITSELF INDEPENDENT
China says that
"Taiwan considering itself independent is like dividing the country. China
does not recognize it as an independent country. Chinese President Xi Jinping
has said many times that he will capture it one day through military force. He
says that Taiwan will one day be included in the border of China.
In this context, China has
significantly increased its military activities around Taiwan, including
regular aerial and naval incursions into Taiwan's Air Defense Identification
Zone (ADIZ).
According to China, the
only reference to Taiwan territory in the United Nations is 'Taiwan, a province
of China.' Taiwan has never been a country, neither in the past nor in the
future. Taiwan is an inseparable part of China's territory. This is history and
reality.
Supporting
"Taiwan independence" is tantamount to interfering in China's
internal affairs, and agreeing to Taiwan's independence is aimed at destroying
the country. China says the Taiwan issue is linked to its national sovereignty
and territorial integrity.
PROVIDING ARMS TO TAIWAN BY AMERICA
Taiwan considers itself an
independent nation and is ready to defend its independence. China is eager to
attack Taiwan. America maintains strategic relations with Taiwan and provides
necessary assistance to Taiwan for self-defense.
Under the Taiwan Relations
Act (TRA), 1979, the US is obliged to assist Taiwan in case China increases
pressure or attacks Taiwan. On this basis, providing arms to Taiwan is part of
US policy, which increases Taiwan's self-defense capability and protects it
from potential threats from China.
Taiwan's
Defense Ministry says that China is seriously violating Indo-Pacific peace and
stability. Its actions have hurt international security and economies. It has
urged other countries to speak out against China's actions. While China
considers the supply of weapons to Taiwan by the US as a violation of its
sovereignty.
SKY BOW DEFENSE SYSTEM
Taiwan
has deployed two dangerous skybow, air defense systems against China. It is
considered most important for the security of Taiwan. The biggest feature of
this defense system is that it is so dangerous that even if a missile is coming
down rapidly from 100 kilometers above in the air, this sky bow defense system
of Taiwan will stop it in the sky itself.
A SPECIAL PLAN TO DEFEND TAIWAN
Keeping in mind the tension
between China and Taiwan, America has made a special plan to protect Taiwan.
This plan has been made to protect Taiwan from a possible attack by China.
The
US is in the final stages of sending Taiwan about $570 million in security aid
- the largest package ever sent, and sure to frustrate China. The US is
Taiwan's oldest and largest supplier of military aid.
CHINA EXPANSIONIST POLICY
All
the presidents of China work on an expansionist policy. They grabbed half of
Mongolia and occupied a large part of Turkmenistan. They occupied a large area
of Kazakhstan. They have occupied the whole of Tibet. They have occupied many
villages in Nepal. China calls the vast forests of Bhutan its own. Due to Nehru's
cowardice, China occupied many square kilometers of Indian land.
It
has a dispute with Japan over four islands. It has an evil eye on Taiwan and
considers it one of its provinces. It took back Hong Kong from Britain. It has
occupied Macau. It has a dispute with Indonesia over 8 islands. It had an evil
eye on Myanmar but Myanmar made a compromise and in return, it gave an island
in the Indian Ocean to China where China has built its naval base.
WHAT HISTORY SAYS?
- Taiwan
came under Chinese control during the Qing dynasty but was ceded to Japan
in 1895 after China's defeat in the Sino-Japanese War.
- China
reoccupied Taiwan in 1945 following Japan's defeat in World War II, but
due to the civil war between nationalists and communists, the nationalists
fled and took refuge in Taiwan in the year 1949.
- The
roots of the Taiwan issue can be traced back to the civil war (1927-1950)
between the Nationalist Party (Kuomintang) and the Communist Party of
China (CPC).
- After
the Communist victory in 1949, the Nationalist government was forced to
take refuge in Taiwan and established the Republic of China (ROC) there,
while the CPC declared the establishment of the People's Republic of China
(PRC) on the mainland.
- The
PRC claims sovereignty over Taiwan and insists that there is only one
China and that Taiwan is part of it.
INDIA'S ROLE:
Since
1949, India has been following the One-China policy where it accepts Taiwan and
Tibet as part of China. But it also values its economic and strategic
relations with Taiwan. India's goal is to prevent the escalation of the
conflict.
However, India uses this
policy to build a diplomatic argument, that is, if India believes in the
'One-China' policy then China should also believe in the 'One-India' policy.
China believes that
supporting Taiwan is like interfering in China's internal affairs. Despite
China's expansionist policy, no one trusts China's intentions despite having
good economic relations with Mongolia, Laos, Vietnam, Myanmar, Afghanistan,
Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan. China wants to have sole rule
over the South China Sea. It is also building artificial islands there.
Only 20 countries around
the world recognize Taiwan as a sovereign nation, meaning various governments
from Latin America to Africa have been embroiled in a years-long diplomatic
dispute. However, it is true that the US has "a strong informal
relationship" with Taiwan.
Taiwan
has over the decades developed its own identity with its own government,
constitution, and democratic system. Many Taiwanese people identify themselves
as Taiwanese rather than Chinese.
